It's easy to dream big and want more than what you currently have. There is nothing wrong with wanting more in your life and living more to your fullest potential.
This is usually where most start to feel a little uneasy though.
Having more and wanting more is great but most people tend to stop right there and think that they are incapable of achieving more. They find reasons to not go after their big dreams because it all seems like a lot of work and are unsure of how to exactly get there.
Dreams do take work, or else you would have already achieved whatever you want, but you are also capable of putting in the work if you want it bad enough.
I work with women all of the time in achieving their health and fitness goals. Some have jaw-dropping progress and others... they fall off completely and go back to where they were comfortable. Eating out all of the time and then wondering why they don't feel good about themselves and feel like they had failed because they didn't achieve what they wanted to in the first place.
It saddens me that others are so easy to give up on themselves and go back to what they were used to after talking to me about how much it would mean for them to reach their goals.
I can tell you that I fell off many times and it taught me where I struggle. I may feel like I had failed at that moment but honestly, I just had to take a step back and remind myself of what I was working so hard for, make some new goals, and get to work.
So I want to share my 7 Tips to Set Goals and Achieve Them because I know that we all struggle with this.
7 Tips to Set Goals and Achieve Them
Grab a piece of paper and a pen because we are about to bring clarity to your goals and help you to achieve them!
1. Write down your major dreams and goals
Don't chicken out on this. Put aside all fear and doubt that you may have.
What do you really want? What have you always wanted? What would you do if you knew you would not fail? It doesn't matter what anyone else would say, I want you to think of all of the things that you have ever wanted to have or do but haven't due to your current situation.
Write them ALL down.
2. Ask yourself specific questions
- What is the number one thing I want to achieve above anything else?
- What exactly am I trying to accomplish with these goals?
- What will my life be like once I achieve this goal?
- What will my life be like if I don't achieve this goal?
3. Break them down
Set a deadline for your goals. When would you like to achieve them by?
Is the deadline months or years away? Break it down even further into what you need to do monthly.
4. Make your goals SMART
What does SMART mean exactly?
Making your goals specific is answering the who, what, when, where, which, and why. Most would say, "I want to lose 5 pounds and get in shape." A better way to make it more specific with the questions below would be, "Workout 5 days per week and eat clean to lose 5 pounds and get fit."
- Who is involved?
- What do I want to accomplish?
- Is there a specific location?
- In what time frame?
- Are there any requirements or constraints involved?
- What are the reasons/benefits of accomplishing this goal?
To make these more measurable, you will need to establish some criteria on how to measure your progress towards these goals.
What you measure and track your progress it will help you to stay more on track and reach your target dates.
- How much?
- How many?
- How will I know when it is accomplished?
When you identify your goals, your mind already is starting to work on ways to achieve them. You develop the attitude, skills, abilities and financial capacity to achieve them too.
You can attain almost any goal when you plan wisely, and plan the steps and actions that you need to take. When you list your goals you build your self-image and start to see yourself worthy of achieving them.
To be realistic, it must be something that you are willing to work for and able to work for. Only you can decide how high a goal can be for it to be realistic but if you are willing to work for it, it usually is something that is realistic.
A goal should also have a time frame. With no time frame, there is no urgency to reach your goals. "I want to lose 10 pounds someday" will not work.
5. Give yourself a reason WHY
This might be the most important one. It's great to know how and what of every goal but the reason why and digging deep into that will keep you more grounded and on track to work towards it every single day even when you are not feeling very motivated.
If someone were to ask you, "why do you want to achieve that goal?" - what would your response be?
Now dig even deeper. - Why does that mean so much to you?
6. Make your goals visible
Get them out there! I know some goals seem scary to say out loud or even to tell someone else but, trust me. If you keep it all up in your head, more than likely they will never become a reality for you.
Share them with a friend, make a vision board of what you want to achieve and hang it up somewhere where you would see it every day. Change your backgrounds on your devices. ANYTHING.
This will not only to help keep you accountable but it will also remind you every single day what you are working towards.
Not every day will be perfect, so if you can spend a little extra time to make to do this step you are setting yourself up to stay more on track those days you are just not feeling it.
7. Turn your goals into habits
Most of the reason we have yet to achieve our goals is that of our current daily habits.
What do you do every day? Spend too much time scrolling social media, when you should be working out or planning your meals?
Do you currently daily habits support what you want to achieve or are they keeping you from reaching your goals?
I guarantee if you are sitting down watching TV and eating pizza more than 1 time per week, it is not helping you towards losing the extra 10 pounds you have been wanting to.
Get clear and be honest with yourself about what you do and think about what you can do more today that will help you to create the habits you need to reach your goals.
It's not enough to learn and then do nothing with it. So it is time to put all of this into action to reach your goals!
